Three individuals from Panaji have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the High Court of Bombay at Goa, raising concerns about the health hazards caused by unchecked dust pollution resulting from ongoing infrastructure projects in the city. They lament the transformation of the once picturesque Panaji into a dusty environment, attributing it to substandard contractors hired by local authorities for various development projects, including laying cables and pipelines.
The indiscriminate digging of roads has led to widespread dust pollution, tarnishing the city’s reputation and causing discomfort to residents and visitors alike. The petition questions the prolonged duration of these projects and urges the government to expedite their completion to mitigate the residents’ suffering.
Criticism is directed towards the local MLA, Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, for perceived inaction and showmanship. The petitioners call for practical steps, such as Monserrate overseeing the projects personally and urging contractors to accelerate their work before the onset of the monsoon season. They hope for a swift resolution to alleviate the dust pollution plaguing Panaji and restore its charm.
