It is observed that there has been a steady rise in the atmospheric temperature as well as humidity in Goa. The day temperature is hovering at a high of around 34 degrees Celsius but it feels like 38 degrees and the humidity is around 74% at night.
The rising mercury has made the heat unbearable and we are only in mid-March. In Goa May has always been the hottest month. One can only expect the Mercury to rise in the coming days.
It is pertinent to note that in view of the rising temperature across the country, several state health departments have reportedly directed all districts to ensure dedicated beds for heatstroke patients in hospitals and to also follow standard treatment protocol for rapid assessment of suspected heat-related illness.
According to experts heatstroke is a form of hyperthermia in which the body temperature is elevated accompanied by dehydration. The main reason for heat stroke is loss of water and minerals due to prolonged exposure to strong sunlight and heat.
It is a medical emergency and can be fatal if not promptly and properly treated. Cooling the victim of heat stroke and providing Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is the line of treatment.
Drinking lots of water is an effective way of preventing a heatstroke besides indulging in less physical activities. Government and private hospitals in Goa need to be well equipped with all the equipment and medication necessary to treat those suffering from extreme heat, especially children, the elderly, pregnant women and seriously ill persons.
