It was good to see two cyclone shelters being inaugurated in Goa, with much fanfare. Good welfare measure, one would say. However, while we prepare for such emergencies as we cannot predict when exactly cyclone could strike, we need to direct our focus towards preserving the environment and maintaining the ecological balance in the region, in the first place.
All infrastructure projects involving destruction of nature, must be reviewed and scrapped. Cutting of trees, dumping debris on mangroves and wetlands, etc., must be stopped. We need to understand, we cannot play with Nature. As we are all aware, Nature will strike back someday but we don’t know the hour or the day. And when Nature strikes, we very well know the consequences. So, let’s direct our time, effort, energy and money towards saving the environment. Prevention is better than cure!
