Citizens prefer to opt for treatment in a government hospital over a private hospital since treatment in a government hospital is free and many patients cannot afford to take treatment in a private hospital. Ironically speaking it is learnt that a patient was referred to a private hospital by the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) on Thursday. The relatives of the lady patient who was referred to a private hospital by SGDH has reportedly claimed that the hospital doctors only gave the option of referring the patient to private hospitals. The primary responsibility to provide adequate healthcare services in public health facilities including the government hospitals lies with the state governments. Government hospitals should have adequate manpower both medical and paramedical including specialist doctors for every department. It would be prudent for the Goa government to resolve all issues at the South Goa District Hospital like the lack of essential equipment, adequate staff, etc. This will go a long way in reducing the number of patients at the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim which is already overburdened.
