Rising accidents caused by drunk tourists

The alarming rise in road accidents involving rental cars is a matter of serious concern, especially as many cases involve drivers under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Almost every week, we hear tragic reports of innocent people losing their lives or suffering serious injuries because someone chose to drive irresponsibly. It is even more worrying that many such incidents involve rented vehicles, which are often easily accessible without adequate checks on the driver’s condition or background.

Drunk driving is not just a traffic offence; it is a direct threat to public safety. Families are losing loved ones, pedestrians are living in fear, and responsible motorists are becoming victims of others’ negligence. One reckless decision can destroy lives and shatter dreams forever. This situation raises serious questions about what additional measures the authorities are taking to curb such incidents and whether rental car companies are being held accountable for properly verifying drivers before handing over vehicles.
The government must take immediate and decisive action to prevent further tragedies. This could include increasing police patrols and sobriety checks, introducing stricter penalties for drunk driving, and making rental agencies responsible for maintaining proper records and reporting suspicious cases. It may also help to install dash cameras in rent-a-car vehicles, make GPS tracking and speed-monitoring devices mandatory, ensure immediate cancellation or long-term suspension of driving licences of intoxicated drivers involved in accidents, and speed up court proceedings in drunk-driving cases so offenders are punished without undue delay. Road safety is a shared responsibility. While authorities must enforce stricter laws, citizens must also act responsibly and understand that driving under the influence can cost innocent lives. We sincerely hope the concerned authorities and the Minister will treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves before more lives are lost.
