The continuous hike in power tariffs in Goa is significantly burdening ordinary citizens. Tariffs increased by 1.58% in 2022-23 and by 5.19% in 2023-24, with a proposed 3.48% hike for 2024-25. Amidst soaring living costs, domestic consumers urgently need relief from this escalation. Shortage of tap water in Majorda-Utorda-Calata forces hundreds to purchase potable water daily. Tap water pressure is so low that some households barely receive five litres over five hours each morning. Numerous areas suffer severe water shortages, igniting frustration and doubts about promised “Ache Din.”
The 2012 decision by the Manohar Parrikar government to eliminate VAT on petrol reduced prices by Rs 11. However, since 2015, VAT hikes aimed at revenue generation have driven petrol prices upward, leaving households struggling to cope. With fuel prices soaring daily, the state government shows no inclination to offer relief, instead suggesting a switch to electric vehicles. This, combined with inflation and high commodity prices, exacerbates the financial strain on consumers. The ripple effect of diesel price hikes extends to transportation costs, elevating food and essential item prices, further straining the common man. The surge in essential commodity prices has made life increasingly challenging for people.
