Salcete's real estate boom: A threat to local heritage

Salcete taluka, filled with picturesque villages in South Goa, has long been cherished for its lush greenery, and strong sense of community. However, rapid real estate development is posing a serious threat to its cultural and demographic fabric. Expensive housing projects, out of reach for local villagers, are leading to an influx of new settlers, pushing long-time residents to migrate elsewhere. . The influx of wealthy outsiders not only alters the social landscape but also dilutes local traditions and heritage. Salcete's unique Goan culture, deeply rooted in generations of village life, risks being overshadowed by an influx of settlers with different lifestyles and values. Furthermore, the village’s infrastructure, especially water supply, is under severe strain. A growing population will only worsen the water shortage, affecting both households and agricultural lands. The government must step in to protect Salcete's future by offering subsidies for local villagers to buy homes within their village.  The village panchayat has a critical role to play in preventing irreversible damage to the village’s identity. Strict regulations on new construction projects should be implemented to curb unchecked urbanization.
