This is in reference to the news report titled “Goa’s Beach Waters Infested with Disease-Causing Pathogens” dated October 15th (TGE Oct. 15). Goa’s image as a popular tourist destination now stands severely tarnished and badly dented after the dismal picture painted by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
A recent survey of water samples from ten beaches in Goa (five in the north and five in the south), conducted by the GSPCB, has revealed high concentrations of fecal coliform and high BOD levels. These levels are significantly above permissible limits, rendering the waters unsafe for bathing and posing a danger to public health.
The reason attributed to this issue is the unabashed discharge of raw sewage and domestic wastewater into the sea by beach shacks, establishments, and some residential units along the beaches. It is shocking that such practices have been allowed to continue unchecked by the concerned public health authorities, to the extent of posing serious health hazards to those who bathe in the waters and enjoy water sports. It is time for the Goa Tourism Department to take action and save our once-pristine beaches, which were once the pride of Goa.
