TheInternational Day of the Girl Child was celebrated on October 11 like everyyear. The day highlights and addresses women empowerment and the needs andchallenges that girls face when it comes to their rights. We must eliminate allforms of discrimination against girls, including negative cultural attitudesand practices. In many parts of the world, girls are still discriminated whenit comes to education and their rights are trampled upon. It is sad in some partsof our country child marriage, education inequality, gender-based violence andgirls’ rights to enter places of worship or public spaces during menstruationare still prevalent.
