Visiting Colva Beach on the morning of Jan 1 was sickening to say the least! As far as the eye can see; Garbage(glass/plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic bags, footwear, pampers, clothing, discarded celebration items, etc) Indians in general boast a lot about Indian values, religious teachings, nationalism, etc but this horrible sight just proves our hypocrisy! Does New Year's celebration where thousands of Indian tourists flock to Goa mean turning Goan beaches into a horrible garbage dump! What is the actual cost to the state in terms of pollution and negative impact on our environment, biodiversity and ecosystems!
I recognise that there are also many decent Indian tourists coming to Goa but sadly they are in the minority ! However, the buck finally stops with Goans generally and mostly corrupt/incompetent politicians. Where is the plan by the Goa Government to work towards a secure and cleaner celebration? This menace has been going on for years; What type of tourists are we attracting? This colossal failure of Goans and the Goa Government in this regard will severely damage Goan tourism in the long run; stakeholders be warned.
