It is learnt that various social activists have denounced the PWD minister for his statement that Janata Darbars are not for activists. The statement was reportedly made by the minister after some activists raised queries at the Janata Darbar in Mapusa on Monday. It must be said that social activists are first citizens and then activists. Hence as citizens they cannot be barred from attending the Janata Darbars. These darbars are held for the authorities to listen to people’s grievances and to ensure speedy redressal. It must be said that social activists have their ears on the ground and are well versed with the issues people face. Hence activists can play a vital role in presenting the problems faced by the common man and seek solutions from the government. In Indian democracy every citizen has the right to speak. The freedom of speech under Article 19(1) (a) includes the right to express one's views and opinions on any issue through any medium. The authorities concerned need to give a patient hearing to the grievances raised by the general public, including the activists, and try to resolve the issues.
