Recently an Indian male ex-cricketer has been appointed as the coach for the women’s cricket team. This is not the first time that a male has been appointed as a manager, coach, physiotherapist, commentators, and in other capacities in sports and games played by women.
Nowadays, women have broken all the glass ceilings whether in politics, sports, corporate, business, IT, science and in several other challenging fields.
There are tours (all-India, abroad), hiking, mountaineering, biking, adventure sports etc. that are solely handled by women and for women.
These activities attest to the fact that women can take care of themselves and also plan, perhaps much better than males! When this is the case then why are males appointed in ladies’ sports teams?
Would the sports ministry or any sports board/body appoint a woman in men’s sports? Henceforth, no male should be appointed in any official or non-official capacity in women-oriented sports and games.
Let us stop this patriarchal mind-set and appoint only women in their specialised domains. This step would also help generate jobs for women who are into sports and have studied sports management and medicine.
