Take steps against harassment of foreign tourists

The videos circulating on social media showing foreign women tourists being harassed by male tourists at Calangute beach are disturbing and unacceptable. In the viral videos, the women appear clearly uncomfortable. Such behaviour must be dealt with firmly and without delay. Goa has long been known as India’s party destination with a relaxed atmosphere. However, this image cannot be used as an excuse for weak enforcement of the law. The incident has rightly caused public anger, with many demanding strict action against those involved. Incidents like these may be one of the reasons for the recent decline in tourist numbers in Goa. Similar cases have been reported in the past and have also gone viral on social media. Despite repeated refusals, some miscreants continue to tease and harass women. Women and families visiting popular beaches such as Calangute, Baga, Arambol and Colva have repeatedly complained of such behaviour. Beaches that were once peaceful are now facing frequent incidents of unwanted attention. This shows a growing loss of values and conscience among some people, which is worrying for Goa’s future. If this nuisance is not controlled immediately, foreign tourists may stop visiting India. The safety and security of tourists is a State responsibility. Police surveillance must be increased to prevent such indiscipline, which could otherwise lead to more serious crimes.
