On Sunday cyclone Tauktae hit Goa severely due to which many people suffered immense losses and claiming the lives of 3 people.
Agricultural produce was also destroyed with banana and cashew plantations, betel nut trees, rice, wheat crops bearing the brunt of the cyclonic winds.
Besides, vegetables grown in fields were also ruined with families dependent on agricultural crops facing loss of lakhs of rupees.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that the government will provide financial assistance to those affected by the cyclone.
He has directed the agriculture department to prepare a report on the losses suffered by farmers in rural areas and submit it to the government.
What brings to mind is some years back when Goa witnessed floods due to unprecedented rains and crops and plantations were destroyed, the government had also promised compensation.
However, till date some of the farmers have not received the compensation from the government.
Hope better sense prevails on those in power so that the required compensation is quickly given and the poor affected farmers need not have to wait for years like before.
