Mirabag protesters have called off their 49-day round-the-clock agitation over the bandhara issue after assurances from Pramod Sawant that a cancellation remark would be placed on the project file and that cases against protesters would soon be withdrawn.
The Chief Minister’s sudden announcement appears linked to the upcoming by-election in Ponda, as mounting pressure from protesters left him with limited options. It remains to be seen whether he will honour his commitment to cancel the project or delay matters until after the polls.
The Mirabag protesters deserve credit for their unity and persistence, which compelled the government to reconsider the controversial project in line with public sentiment. Their sustained effort highlights the strength of collective action.
Attention now turns to whether the government will also review the contentious Section 39A, especially if it aims to build public trust ahead of the by-election and demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of Goa and its people.
