Unfair practice in sweet shops must be checked

The officers of the Goa’s legal metrology department do a good job by checking the weights, measures, specifications and other details of consumer goods and food products. The department becomes more active before Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali festivals when people could be taken for a ride by certain shop owners. The offenders are fined, the goods seized and the matter ends there. The department should cancel the licence of repeat offenders.

One major problem that we face is that most shops that sell milk-based sweets and the like, weigh the sweets in card boxes the weights of which are never adjusted. This is not right as the customers are shortchanged and pay for less quantity of sweets. In all fairness, the weight of the box should be nullified prior to weighing the sweets. Alternatively, the sweets could be weighed in aluminium foils and then kept in the box. This way the weight would be correct and the smell of the box will not permeate into the sweets.
