Netanyahu is exploiting US President Biden's inconsistent policy towards Israel. At times, Biden demonstrates strong support by providing military aid and vetoing UN resolutions aimed at restraining Israel in the Gaza conflict.
However, this stance often shifts, with Biden occasionally urging Netanyahu not to launch military offensives on Rafah and criticizing Israel for using US-supplied weapons on unarmed Palestinians. In more extreme measures, Biden has halted the supply of ammunition and other equipment, such as 1000 lb. bombs, to Israel.
One might question why the US supplied such heavy weaponry like 1000 lb. bombs, as most combat in Gaza involves street fighting where lighter arms would suffice. Recently, Biden announced an additional US$ 1 billion in military aid to Israel in an effort to deter the attack on Rafah.
Despite Biden's warnings, Netanyahu has disregarded them and continued the advance, which the UN and other agencies warn will result in massive civilian casualties.
Netanyahu's determination to eliminate Hamas by attacking Rafah, believed to be the terrorist organization's last stronghold, is misguided.
India has also adopted a similarly inconsistent approach by supporting Palestine's full membership in the UN while at other times abstaining or voting against measures concerning Gaza, such as ceasefire calls. India should adopt a consistent stance on the conflict based on principles rather than opportunistic considerations.
