The Centre has been advocating 'One nation, One election' and this been in the pipeline for some years but it was impossible to implement it . Law commission had made certain suggestions but I don't think hardly any attention was paid to them. The Modi government has suddenly decided to follow up with the concept and even notified a eight-member high level committee with the timing just before general elections looks a little suspicious and also a special session of Parliament is convened. What was the reason behind convening such a session when the Parliament monsoon session concluded recently? It may be recalled that the current push from the Centre for simultaneous polls is not a sudden jolt but the BJP mentioned in 2014 Lok Sabha elections manifesto but doing the same at the fag end of the second term in haste raises eyebrows. Logistics required in order to conduct simultaneous polls for the world's biggest democracy is not only huge but mind-boggling and the Election Commission will have a enormous task of arranging 30 lakh functional EVMS and VVPAT machines and deploying enormous number of central forces around the country but will the force be sufficient ? I feel ballot paper elections is the best option to go for 'One nation, One election' but in phases because of security reasons as we cannot trust our neighbours.
