The Supreme Court of India has been regularly castigating the government of UP for it's overreach and ill treatment of the minorities. This week too the court caustically observed that "the rule of law appears to have been broken down in the state." This came against the UP police's practice of converting monetary and civil disputes into criminal cases. The court mentioned that any effort to settle civil cases and claims by way of applying pressure through criminal prosecution should be deprecated and discouraged. It also touched upon on misuse of power by the police day in and day out. A week earlier the court had come down heavily upon the UP sarkar for dispensing bulldozer justice and had asked it to pay Rs10 lakhs each to three persons whose houses were bulldozed four years back sans notice, without following the due process of law. There is virtually no rule of law in the land anymore, the bulldozer (in)justice continues, the minorities are lynched, dalits are raped, government benefits meant for the downtrodden are hijacked by cartels, infrastructure contracts are awarded to criminal syndicates and what have you.
