Protecting women is a major concern in our society. The government’s recent implementation of stringent measures to prevent atrocities against women is commendable. From 2020 to June 15, 2024, 1,232 cases of crimes against women were registered in Goa. These crimes vary in nature, but certain hotspots like railway stations, schools, streets, and lanes are more prone to such distressing encounters. Increased patrolling in these areas has proven effective.
Domestic violence, often related to dowry and other family issues, also remains a significant problem. Many women remain silent due to the stigma attached to such issues. The establishment of a separate women’s police station in Panaji to address these concerns is a significant step forward. Newspaper sources report that a toll-free women’s helpline number, 1091, and a WhatsApp number, 7875756177, are available 24/7 for women in distress. This initiative is a crucial support system. The government’s efforts in reducing crimes against women are praiseworthy. With our vigilant support and cooperation, we can work together to maintain the fabric of our society and ensure the safety and dignity of all women.
