Every Indian state cherishes its unique language and identity. Goa is no exception, with Konkani as its soul and voice. It is, therefore, surprising and troubling that Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, recently emphasized the importance of speaking Marathi correctly and fluently, despite Konkani being the official language of Goa. Marathi belongs to Maharashtra, not Goa, and such statements sow confusion and hurt the sentiments of Niz Goenkars. When the leader of Goa subtly promotes Marathi over Konkani, it raises an uncomfortable question: Does the CM’s allegiance truly lie with Goa’s heritage or with Maharashtra’s linguistic politics? A heartfelt salute to Dr Jack Sequeira and other true champions who fought for Goa’s separate statehood and identity. Sadly, some of our MLAs and ministers seem to harbor ‘duplicate blood’—their loyalties divided, potentially aiming to merge Goa’s cultural essence into Maharashtra’s fold. Goa’s unique history and heritage must be respected—not exploited for hidden political motives. Goa’s Konkani language and culture are treasures to be preserved and celebrated. We urge our leaders to honour Goa’s identity wholeheartedly and stop confusing the people with mixed messages. Goa belongs to Goans, and its language is Konkani—not Marathi.
