The Directorate of Education has issued a circular directing schools to implement a 500-metre drug-free zone around their campuses. This is a clear acknowledgement that drugs are being used around schools. It has asked all heads of schools to take immediate and appropriate action to implement the recommendation. But this begs the question: how do you actually implement it? A wiser approach would have been to improve policing and crack down hard on drug peddlers across the State. Drug peddling should be made a non-bailable offence and attract stringent punishment. The alleged nexus between the drug mafia and politicians must also be tackled firmly. Merely issuing recommendations will not solve the problem. What is needed is clear intent and effective action on the ground.
