The recent actions of IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, serving as Food and Drug Administration Commissioner in Mumbai, have highlighted the importance of strict enforcement of food safety laws. Known for his integrity and reportedly transferred 25 times during his 21-year career, he has earned a reputation for taking firm action against illegal practices without fear or favour. Within weeks of assuming office, he launched inspections of restaurants, canteens and dairy units to ensure compliance with FSSAI regulations. Several establishments were sealed or closed for operating without valid licences or for failing to maintain hygiene standards, placing public health at risk. His efforts are aimed at protecting consumers from adulterated and unsafe food, especially children, who are more vulnerable to health hazards. He has also appealed to parents to discourage children from consuming unhealthy roadside fast food, chips and sugary soft drinks. His message is that prevention is better than cure, and food safety is a shared responsibility. India needs more officers who uphold the law with honesty, courage and commitment. Such leadership can inspire confidence in governance and ensure a healthier future for every citizen.
