Goa is already struggling with household garbage and other waste. On top of this, rapid construction activity has led to piles of construction debris being dumped along roadsides, in fields and even in water bodies, especially in coastal villages. This is deeply worrying.
Before granting building licences, panchayats and municipalities should require builders to give a written undertaking that all construction debris will be cleared. They should also collect a refundable security deposit to ensure compliance. Goa is already running out of space to dispose of regular waste, let alone construction debris.
The attached picture shows construction waste lying along the roadside at Benaulim beach for nearly four years. It is reportedly linked to a supermarket owner. Will the local MLA please take note and ensure that this long-pending issue is resolved?
