Several shocking videos have recently emerged showing adult women being harassed, molested and allegedly sexually abused by roadside vigilantes claiming to enforce “moral policing” against women who associate with men or spend time with their boyfriends in parks and other places. Why do such incidents continue to occur? One reason is that instead of demanding action against such vigilante groups, some political leaders are heard defending their actions and advising women to remain indoors or avoid public places with male friends or partners in the name of “sanskar”, religion, tradition and culture. When such vigilantism receives political support, individuals may begin to believe they have the authority to question, intimidate, punish or assault others. India has progressed in many areas, yet women continue to face attempts to control their choices and freedom in the name of culture and morality. The message of “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” cannot coexist with practices that intimidate and humiliate women. Political leaders and law-enforcement agencies must ensure that no group is allowed to take the law into its own hands. Women deserve safety, dignity and equal freedom in public spaces.
