Even at the tender age of 7, Meghan Trainor had already tapped into her creative songwriting ability. After learning the classic song, “Heart and Soul” on the piano, a young Meghan used the instrumental to write lyrics to her first song about how happy she was that her aunt married a Trinidadian man.

After writing her first song at 7, Meghan caught the songwriting bug and began showing off her songwriting abilities everywhere she went, even at the zoo. She wrote it in her bedroom and even produced it herself. She and her father would even go around showing people her songs. Some time later, Trainor entered a songwriting music convention where she was discovered by country music publisher, Big Yellow Dog who quickly became a fan and signed her on when she was just 17.

When Trainor first began writing lyrics to “All About that Bass” with music producer, Kevin Kadish, she didn’t expect the song to be such a hit. Meghan Trainor has previously said that “All About that Bass” was intended to be a throwaway song that she wrote in 45 minutes. Her follow-up single, “Lips Are Moving” was written in 8 minutes.

Starting in sixth grade she missed almost three years of school due to a cough caused by mold on campus.

In an interview with the Cape Cod Times, Trainor talks about how songs about female empowerment are the sort of thing she wishes she’d heard more of when she was younger.

She said: “They’re the songs that I wish I had before I went into high school. Like, love yourself more, respect yourself more. I hope little girls, like my little cousin, I hope she’s goes into high school knowing these songs and how cool she is. There are girl empowerment songs “ like “I love myself I’m beautiful” “ but there are also “I deserve a good man, I deserve a good boyfriend, man, you should take me out.” That’d be awesome (to hear as a kid). I wish I had that before”.
