The Bulbul International Film Festival proved to be a bonanza for children in Goa, offering them the opportunity to experience a rich mix of national and international cinema and, in the process, gain exposure to diverse cultures, perspectives and storytelling styles. The festival concludes on January 17 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, with the screening of the closing film Tanvi – The Great, directed by Anupam Kher. The finale will be followed by a vibrant fusion band performance featuring musical diva Divya Naik, along with Rajesh Madgaonkar and Norman.
Over four days, the festival presented an engaging line-up of films such as Bird Boy, Secret Delivery, Sua’s Home, Small Dogs Bark Loud, The Legend of Scythian Gold, Mary Anning, Robot Girl and Benjamin Bat. The screenings not only entertained young audiences but also encouraged empathy, curiosity and thoughtful reflection.
Adding an interactive dimension to the festival was the session Friends of the Forest: Meet Snakes & Reptiles, conducted by wildlife educator Charan Desai, founder of SAWE (Study and Awareness of Wildlife and Environment). The session introduced children to the fascinating world of reptiles, dispelled common myths and fostered respect for wildlife, while spreading awareness about environmental conservation in an engaging and child-friendly manner.
Creativity and learning continued with a masterclass on the World of Animation conducted by filmmaker Soumitra Ranade, founder-chairman and creative director of Paperboat Design Studios. Moderated by Siddhesh Gaunecar, faculty member of the Goa College of Fine Arts, the session inspired aspiring young creators and students keen on exploring animation as a medium of expression.
The festival also featured lighter moments, including a hair-styling competition for parents. A special screening of Ata Thambaycha Naay, directed by Shivraj Waichal, struck a deep emotional chord with the full-house audience, leaving a lasting impression through its powerful narrative and compelling performances. The Master & Miss Bulbul Fashion Pageant saw young participants confidently walking the ramp.
