Akira
A film that celebrates a woman's resilience, the film which is a remake of the Tamil film Mouna Guru about a woman who has to single handedly fight her own battles when no one seems to believe her story. Starring Sonakshi Sinha and directed by A.R. Murugadoss, the film also sees Anurag Kashyap stepping into the shoes of a baddie and doing it to perfection.
Pink
The Amitabh Bachchan starrer film discusses sexual consent. When a young woman injures a powerful politician's son after she refuses his advances, she and her friends have to fight the battle of their life to get the court to believe their side of the story. Big B plays the role of a lawyer who defends the girls played by Taapsee Panu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tarang.
Airlift
Air lift tells the tale of unsung heros Mr Mathews and Mr Vedi who were responsible for the successful evacuation of 1,70,000 Indians who were stranded in Kuwait in 1990 when Sadam Hussain's army took over the country causing wide scale destruction and mayhem all around. The role of both these admirable men is amalgamated into Akshay Kumar's character of Ranjit Katyal, a successful and shrewd businessman in Kuwait who overnight is forced to abandon his posh lifestyle and face the brutal reality of war.
Kahaani 2
Returning for a second film under the Kahaani franchise, Kahaani 2 starring Vidya Balan once again and also set in Kolkata focuses on the kidnapping of a little girl. After the girl is kidnapped, the mother played by Vidya Balan meets with an accident that leaves her in a coma. However when the police officer played by Arjun Rampal visits her in hospital he is shocked to see that she matches the photograph that has been circulating around about a wanted criminal.
Neerja
This is a wonderful biopic on late flight attendant Neerja Bhanot who was shot while defending passengers on the New York bound Pan Am Flight 73 back in 1986 which was hijacked by members of the Abu Nidal Organisation, a Palestine terrorist group. For her incredible bravery, she became the youngest recipient of India's highest peacetime military award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra. The role has been essayed beautifully by Sonam Kapoor.
Dangal
Once again Aamir Khan delivers an incredible performance in a smashing hit of a movie Dangal which is a sports biopic on Mahavir Singh Phogat who taught his daughters Geeta and Babita to wrestle. Geeta Phogat went on to win gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (55 kg) while her Babita Kumari won the silver (51 kg).
Udta Punjab
This film was in the news long before it's release owing to the many cuts that the censor board put on it. However while the film makers finally won the court battle, the film was definitely worth the fuss. Starring Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the film focuses on the drug mafia prevalent in Punjab and was certainly an eye opener.
