With an aim to create ‘Heart Heroes’, Manipal Hospitals announced the launch of World Heart Day campaign - ‘Guardians of Heart’. The corporate campaign will be rolled across various centres of Manipal ie Dwarka (New Delhi), Vijayawada, Mangalore, Goa and Jaipur. With the launch of this campaign, Manipal aims to motivate, educate and inspire common man from all walks of life to become heart smart thereby contributing to the vision of a healthy nation.
Under the campaign, the hospital conducted various activities to mark World Heart Day. The cardiology team of Manipal Hospitals Goa conducted exclusive workshops and imparted basic life support system and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for media and public to equip them with first hand training to handle heart emergencies.
Rajtilak Naik, president of Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) in the presence of other GUJ members Sagun Gawade, Vasudev Pagi, Ganesh Shetkar and Suraj Nandrekar and Tulsidas Raul inaugurated workshop for media. On behalf of Manipal Hospital Goa, unit head Manish Trivedi, Dr Shekhar Salkar, hod Oncology, Dr Rakesh Deshmane, heart surgeon, Dr Misha Sethi, head of ICU, Dr Sabyasachi Mukhopadhyay, cardiologist, Dr Vinayaga Pandian, consultant cardiologist Dr Jyoti Kusnur, cardiologist, Dr Noel Henriques, cardiologist, witnessed the inauguration.
On September 28, training workshop on Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support (BLS) was open for public participation. Prince Jacob, comedian and musician of the Konkani community, unveiled the programme and also released a “Cardiac special heart package”. During this program Dr Sabyasachi, consultant cardiologist spoke on ‘Angiogram and Angioplasty’ while Cardiologist Dr Jyoti Kusnur spoke on heart attack and cardiac arrest and Dr Rakesh Deshmane spoke on open heart surgery. There was also a talk by Dr Rakesh Agarwal, consultant Psychiatrist on ‘How to deal with stress’ while people from all walks of life participated in the training with great enthusiasm and motivation to become Heart Heroes. There was also a demonstration of ‘Exercises for the Heart’ by Dr Arati Sunil Halarnekar, physiotherapist, and a talk of ‘Heart Healthy Diet’ by Dr Sharvari, dietician.
Extensive health talks to keep heart healthy were conducted by the cardiac team. Dr. Mukhopadhyay spoke on symptoms of heart attack and the use of angiogram and angioplasty. Dr. Rakesh Deshmane shared details on open-heart surgery. Tips to maintain healthy lifestyle and diet were shared by the doctors as well. Special handbook named “Guardians of Heart” was also unveiled. Studies indicate that almost 80% of heart attacks take place when you are at home and therefore as a first response, CPR plays a crucial role in saving lives. Last year, Manipal Hospitals imparted similar training to the teachers to make them heart smart and around 25000 “Heart Smart” teachers were certified post the training.
India is currently witnessing nearly 2 million heart attacks a year and majority of the victims are youngsters. Every Year 17.9 Million people die from Cardio vascular diseases including Heart Disease and Stroke. One fifth of the deaths in India are from coronary heart disease. By the year 2020, it will account for one third of all deaths. Sadly, many of these Indians will be dying young. Heart disease in India occurs 10 to 15 years earlier than in the West.
