Yet, the paradox of the digital age remains striking. While social media helps one stay connected to a friend living overseas, the name of the neighbour living next door remains a question mark. While one is aware of the recent cousins’ trip abroad, one is often unaware of what is happening in their immediate surroundings. Despite these contradictions, there is little denying the significant role social media now plays in people's personal and professional lives. For many, it has become not just a means of communication, but also a source of information, opportunity and livelihood.
MORE THAN JUST NETWORKING
“I feel that in this age and day we need social media as much as any other source of media and communication for three main purposes, which are awareness of the happenings in the world, communication for remote jobs as well as staying in touch with loved ones,” mentions Sabrin Shaikh, Head of Research and Development at Key2enable Assistive Technology. She also mentions how social media has become a source of income for many. “Many make use of social media as a way to earn, often by creating content, expanding their business online, etc.”
For Parth Bhate, a student, social media is about staying in touch with his friends and other communities. “When I can’t meet my friends regularly, social media helps me stay connected with them,” he mentions. However, social media has gone beyond maintaining contact. Often, people look at it as a form of entertainment as well. “I often use social media for relaxation and enjoyment. There are so many creative people online who often upload a lot of innovative content that sometimes inspires me immensely,” he adds.
INTERNET A LIFELINE
Recently, social media came to the rescue of Diya Naik and others when they found a stray dog near their college. “While we did our best to provide medical care, we were unable to afford the treatment costs. That is when we posted an appeal on social media," she says. Within hours, they had managed to reach a community willing to contribute both their time and money to help the animal. "In fact, some of the people I approached in person were more hesitant to help than those who reached out through social media," she adds.
From crowdfunding medical expenses and supporting social causes to helping small businesses grow and connecting like-minded individuals, social media continues to demonstrate its potential to create meaningful impact and foster communities beyond geographical boundaries.
OTHER SIDE OF THE SCREEN
"While the list of advantages is extensive, the disadvantages begin when usage is not moderated," says Sabrin. She believes that failing to recognise when to pause is when the problem begins. “Allowing social media to influence our decisions, shape our beliefs and dictate the kind of content we consume can ultimately affect the way our minds function,” she states.
Parth believes the worst impact social media has had is that people showcasing the best aspects of their lives often leads to negative self-esteem. “People often post as if they are having the time of their life! While I understand it is a highly curated and edited part of their life which they share on social media, it sometimes makes me perceive myself negatively,” he remarks. Diya agrees that while the benefits of social media cannot be ignored, many of the emerging trends that come along with increased social media usage are concerning. "While I cannot deny its positives, the growing dependence on social media for validation is worrying. The spread of misinformation on sensitive issues, decrease in attention spans, online bullying, and digital fraud are also increasing," she notes.
FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE
While the world observes Social Media Day on June 30, the occasion serves as more than just a celebration of digital connectivity. It provides an opportunity for social media users to reflect on the profound influence it has on our lives. While these platforms have undoubtedly brought the world closer together, perhaps the greatest challenge of the digital age lies in learning how to remain connected online without becoming disconnected from the world and people around us.
