THE GOAN | PANAJI

Goa in the monsoon is often described as a season to slow down. The beaches are deserted, shacks are shut, and heavy showers keep people indoors. Yet, for many young Goans, the rains also bring a familiar complaint: there is nothing to do.

But what if there was a way to turn a gloomy rainy day into an adventure? What if a group of friends could rediscover Goa’s hidden corners armed with nothing more than umbrellas, a few clues and a spirit of exploration?

Welcome to the Umbrella Treasure Hunt – an idea that may just become Goa’s next great monsoon tradition.

Following the clues

The rules are simple. Gather four to six friends on a rainy weekend and split into teams. Each team receives an envelope containing the first clue. The clues do not lead to famous tourist attractions or crowded markets. Instead, they point to places that capture the essence of Goa during the rains.

The first clue may lead to a tiny roadside chapel standing quietly amidst emerald-green paddy fields. Solving the riddle there reveals directions to an old laterite bridge over a stream swollen by monsoon showers. Another clue may take participants to a ferry jetty where mist hangs over the river, while the next could send them in search of a village bakery selling steaming hot *poi* and freshly baked buns.

At every stop, teams complete a small challenge before receiving the next clue. They might take a creative photograph with umbrellas, speak to a local resident to learn one fact about the place, or try a seasonal snack such as hot bhajis with tea. Bonus points could be given for spotting a rainbow or identifying a local bird in the rain.

More than a game

The treasure hunt is not about racing from one destination to another. It is about slowing down and noticing a side of Goa that often goes unseen. During the monsoon, the state transforms into a landscape of overflowing rivers, mist-covered hills and winding village roads. The air smells of wet earth, and every turn offers a scene worth remembering.

It also brings friends together in a way that screens and social media rarely do. There are shared laughs when someone slips in the mud, sudden excitement when a clue is solved, and quiet moments watching the rain fall over fields and rivers.

Adventure on a budget

One of the most appealing aspects of the Umbrella Treasure Hunt is how simple and affordable it is. Friends can travel by bus, ferry or even bicycles. Clues can be handwritten on scraps of paper, hidden in waterproof envelopes. There is no need for expensive tickets or planned tours.

The final treasure does not have to be grand. It could be a picnic basket waiting at the last stop, filled with sandwiches, homemade sweets and flasks of hot coffee. The real reward is the journey itself.

Making monsoon memories

By the end of the day, umbrellas are dripping, shoes are muddy and phones are filled with photographs of unexpected discoveries. Yet what stays longer is something harder to capture – the feeling of having experienced Goa differently.

The Umbrella Treasure Hunt is not just a game. It is a reminder that monsoon is not a season to avoid, but one to embrace. With a little curiosity, a few friends and a willingness to get drenched, even the rain becomes part of the adventure.
