Tushar Kamat and Jairaj Joshi are back! And this time around there is a new exciting Bollywood addition to the mix. With their tunes like Hello Patrao and Soro becoming huge hits, the duo are all set to soon release their new Konkani tune Ponne Dis together with Bollywood singer Suraj Jagan of Give me some Sunshine fame.
“Ponne Dis filled with nostalgia about older days and of wanting to go there again. The tune was inspired by one of our guitarists who has a brother working on the ship and talks about the struggles that they face. So the song is actually a telepathic conversation between two brothers “ one in Goa which is sung by Suraj and one on the shop which is sung by me,” explains Kamat.
Interestingly this song was written by Kamat much before Hello Patrao, and he admits that he didn't think that the tune would be done on such a massive scale. “But at the same time we felt that with already three hits, it was time that we raised the bar,” he adds.
It was during a recording for a friend's song they happened to meet Suraj Jagan and approached him to be a part of the song following which he came onboard. “Goa has always been a special place for me. It is much more than just a party spot for me and I love the vibe of the place,” says Jagan who shifted to Goa about three years ago. At the same time, Suraj admits that he loves doing songs in different languages that I don't understand as you have to depend on the locals to get the pronunciation right. “So it was the connection with Goa coupled with the challenge of a new language that made me take this song up,” he admits, adding that while he hasn't listened to much of Goan folk music he did get an opportunity to hear Goa's noted singer Lorna live once and was “blown away”.
Apart from this, the tune also features some of the music faculty of Kala Academy. “We initially wanted to do the song with some of our Mumbai friends but Jairaj suggested that it would be a good idea to use Goan musicians instead,” says Kamat. “We felt this way Goans would be able to relate to the tune a lot more plus we hope it will motivate musicians in Goa to take up music more seriously. There is a lot of music talent in Goa but music is still pursued more as a hobby by many as they think they will not be able to make a living out of it which is not true.”
The tune has been recorded live rather than depending on computer programming and hence may not be “technically too sound”, reveals Kamat. “The intention was to get listeners to feel that the song is being played right next to them,” he says.
Kamat further states that there is nothing fake about this tune. “ We have learnt that truth resonates and we are presenting something that is truly felt by us,” he says. “We hope to make people realise that it is important to give time for friends and family and the tune can have multiple interpretations. The hope is that people will listen to it again and again and each time come away with a new interpretation. That will be the real recall value.”
