No doubt Goa, especially the coastal belt, has evolved as a melting pot as far as cultures and cuisines are concerned. While restaurants serving continental and Indian cuisines abound along Goa’s cosmopolitan coastline, Japanese diners are few. But Japanese cuisine lovers in Goa may not really lament the chronic lack of choice, thanks to Sakana, a stylishly grunge outfit in Vagator which serves everything Japanese, sushi and sake and that too with aplomb.
Located a short distance from the Anjuna petrol pump, Sakana is known for its extremely diverse patronage and chances are you may find yourself in company of the odd celebrity or two, if you look hard enough in the dimmed interiors, as well as a fair smattering of locals, foreigners and the omnipresent tourists looking for a night-outing.
A dine-out at Sakana is as good as sampling a bit of Japan right from the Japanese Asahi beer, various types of sake, multiple choices of sushi, the subtle miso soup, etc. But perhaps one of the most fascinating dish which comes with a local adaptation is the red snapper sashimi.
The red snapper is one of the most coveted rock fishes in Goa and its wafer thin slices perfectly blend with the light, but sharpish sauce which is a combination olive oil, fresh ginger and garlic, salt, pepper and lots of lemon juice. Never miss out on this treat.
Other popular picks are the teriyaki-laced dishes from tofu to tuna. Momo lovers can also gorge on the steamed dumplings with a Japanese twist.
The other better part about a dining experience at Sakana are the price points. A platter of sushi ranged between Rs. 220 and Rs. 280 is not a bad deal at all, while liquor measures are also liberal for the prices listed on the menu.
