Documentary film GOA, The Land of Shiva which highlights the socio-political and ecological effects of the Goan mining industry andcatalogues an unfiltered portrayal of commercial interests in conflict with the community and environment will be screened on November 19, 7 pm at the Museum of Goa, Pilerne
The 75 minute film directed by Massimiliano Mazzotta, looks into how Goa has become one of the world's largest arsenals of iron ore which began during the colonial era when governing Portuguese bodies granted foreign investors mining licenses to extract rare, natural resources from Goan land. Among those who were granted licenses was an Italian named Baron Ludovic Toeplitz who arrived in Goa in 1954 and acquired a mining concession entitled Orasso Dongor in North Goa .
The film was recently selected for screening at the Trevi Cinema in Rome, Italy at the first ever Festival Delle Terre “ International Audio-Visual Award in Biodiversity, which annually nominates up to 30 documentaries that record human rights practices in terrain based issues including agriculture, mining, drilling and territorial disputes.
