The South Goa Sessions Court on Friday sentenced Canacona resident Ajay Kharat to life imprisonment for the murder of his uncle in 2022.
The court also directed the accused to pay a fine of Rs 25,000, of which Rs 20,000 will be paid as compensation to the wife of the deceased. The court imposed the fine, stating that the wife had suffered due to the death of her husband and needed to be compensated.
While sentencing the accused to life imprisonment, Additional Sessions Judge Sudhir Shirgaonkar said that no lenient view could be taken as the number of injuries, inflicted with a knife, showed that the accused had the knowledge and intention to commit the murder.
During arguments, Public Prosecutor U Avde submitted that the accused had gone to murder his own uncle, who was older than him. He said no mercy could be shown as the deceased had suffered nine stab injuries to different parts of his body.
According to the prosecution, on November 20, 2022, at around 7 am at Dapot, Loliem, Canacona, the accused murdered his uncle Janu Kharat by stabbing him with a knife, causing multiple injuries, due to previous enmity.
