As the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP) unveiled its election advisory, politicians across parties in private say the message from the organ of the Church is more relevant in minority Saxttidom than elsewhere for more than one reason. For, a host of political parties are vying to occupy the secular space in the minority stronghold this time round. That it has cautioned the people to beware of communal and fascist forces camouflaging behind labels of political alternatives, has only made the politicos to sit up and figure out the political fall out of the advisory.
All eyes focused on Sardinha, Sequeira
All are eyes are focused on South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha and heavyweight Aleixo Sequeira as the Congress high command is all set to finalise tickets for the Goa Assembly polls. The reason is simple. After the exit of Luizinho Faleiro and Reginaldo Lourenco from the Congress, Sardinha and Sequeira are the only two senior minority faces from Saxttidom left in the Congress. Questions are raised whether the party can afford to ignore Sequeira’s ticket claim or the claim made by Sardinha for son Shalom for Curtorim and antagonise the duo and their supporters. Who’s this “unknown” young political figure from Nuvem constituency, who is all set to make a political debut in the ensuing polls, but is yet to come out in the open. A couple of months ago, reports were doing the rounds that this politician had set his eyes on the Nationalist Congress party. Surprisingly, this unknown politician has emerged as a strong contender for the Congress ticket, with reported backing of senior leaders. Young Velim TMC leader, city-based lawyer, Adv Antonio Clovis Da Costa and his supporters find themselves in a tight spot. Having kicked off his campaign in right earnest along with Tennis hero Leander Paes, Antonio’s supporters wonder whether the TMC is scouting for another candidate for Velim. Antonio had a week ago took to the social media against nomination of candidates with criminal background, leaving political observers to wonder whether the uncompromising young lawyer is ready for any eventuality.
Cipru cynosure of all eyes in Navelim
Three-time Navelim Zilla Panchayat member Cipru Cardozo is the cynosure of all eyes in Navelim constituency. Questions are asked whether Cipru will throw his hat in the election ring. For, the Congress has settled for former Minister Avertano Furtado in Naveliim, while Aam Aadmi Party has declared Pratima Coutinho as its candidate. TMC leader Valanka Alemao has kicked off her campaign on the TMC banner. The BJP too has shortlisted a couple of candidates for Navelim.
