MARGAO

In a sudden turn of events unfolding in Curtorim on Sunday, Congress-turned-Trinamool Congress leader Reginaldo Lourenco quit the Trinamool Congress party, less than a month after embracing the Mamata Didi-led party on December 20.

Moments after the former three-time Curtorim MLA sent in his resignation, reports did the rounds that Reginaldo is likely to return to the Congress fold.

Sources said he was in close touch with party leaders, both in Goa and Delhi, and was scheduled to go into a huddle with a senior state leader late Sunday to formalise his return.

Reginaldo e-mailed his resignation to the TMC party on Sunday evening after a meeting with his close workers and supporters at his residence. After his workers gave him the go-ahead signal to quit the TMC and either return to the Congress fold or contest the ensuing polls as an Independent, Reginaldo e-mailed his resignation to the

TMC leaders.

The former MLA, who had quit the Congress on December 20, to join the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata, has been maintaining low-key for quite some time, only raising speculations that he was unhappy with the new political party.

Sources in the know say that Reginaldo has timed his resignation just a day before the Congress party was scheduled to declare party candidates in New Delhi.

A senior leader pointed out that the party has not handed out any assurance to the ex-MLA, saying the leadership insisted that Reginaldo first quit the TMC before the Congress could discuss other issues, including the question of his return to the party fold and the question over the party candidate for Curtorim.

Sources close to Reginaldo informed that his workers and supporters insisted that the ex-MLA quit the TMC and contest the February 14 polls on the Congress banner or as an independent.

“If the Congress throws open the party doors to Reginaldo and nominates him in Curtorim, he will contest on the party banner. If not, we have told Reginaldo to contest the coming polls as an Independent,” remarked a close supporter.

We wish him well, says Moitra

PANAJI: The All India Trinamool Congress has accepted the resignation of Reginaldo Lourenco, even as the party’s Goa in-charge and Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said TMC “wishes him well.”

“AITC has received a letter from Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco resigning from primary membership of the party. We had welcomed him into the party as we have countless others. Now that he wishes to leave, we wish him well,” said Moitra.

On Sunday, Reginaldo submitted his resignation. However, a video of Reginaldo which was circulating indicated he was very much with TMC.

Also, Reginaldo avoided contact with the media after his resignation. However, his letter of resignation was viral on social media.

He did not give any reason in the letter that he sent to Banerjee informing her about his decision to leave TMC.
