CAC Cansaulim scored a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over Varca Sports Club in the All Goa Inter-village Seraulim Panchayat Cup football tournament organised by United Sports Club of Seraulim at SAG ground, Seraulim.
During the lemon break, the teams were level 0-0. The first half of the game was restricted to midfield with both teams adopting a very cautious approach. The only goal-scoring opportunity that came was when a Varca striker sent a powerful shot in the 29th minute but it was palmed away by the Cansaulim keeper for a corner.
The second half saw some attacking football moves but the defence of both teams stood strong. Cansaulim were slightly more dominating and their efforts bore fruits in the 42nd minute when a weak punch from Varca's goalkeeper landed at the feet of Elvino Fernandes, who shot home from close range to give Cansaulim the much-needed lead.
Stunned by the goal, Varca tried their best to equalise with their defence playing at the centre line. However, the Cansaulim defence stood their ground and ensured they did not concede a goal till the final whistle and thus made it to the semifinals. In the other match, USC Seraulim defeated UC Benaulim 2-0.
Chinchinim Veterans beat Calangute on penalties
Chinchinim Veterans prevailed over Calangute Veterans 6-5 via the tie-breaker and moved into the semifinals of the 9th Navelim Inter-village Veterans Cup organised by Navelim Veterans at Rosary ground, Navelim on Wednesday.
Calangute Veterans opened the scoreline through Allywn Fernandes in the 17th minute. In the 56th minute, Fr Stanley equalised for Chinchinim Veterans. In the tiebreaker, Chinchinim Veterans proved to be the better shooters.
Aguiar Memorial football tourney from March 4
Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club Paroda and Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club are among the teams which will vie for the top honours in the late Afonso Aguiar Memorial inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union beginning from March 4 at Government School playground, Cuncolim.
Sixteen teams will participate in the tournament, namely, Navelim Sporting Club, Rozman Cruz Nagoa Verna, Sporting Club of Davorlim, Ambelim Sports Club, Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club, Santa Cruz Club of Cavellossim, Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda, Curtorim Gymkhana, St Anthony Sports Club Assolda, Canacona Sports & Cultural Club, CAC Sports & Social Club Cansaulim, Fr Agnel Sports Club Paroda, Uguem Rising Club, Uguem and hosts Cuncolim Union. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a trophy and the runners-up will get a cash prize of Rs 40,000 and a trophy. The inaugural match will be played on March 4 between Navelim Sporting and Rossman Cruz Nagoa Verna. Levino Dias, ex-coach will declare the tournament open.
Compassion FC win GFA U-14 girls title
Compassion FC trounced FC Goa 8-0 in the finals of the GFA U-14 girls football league match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa. Pearl Fernandes scored seven goals for the winners.
Pearl opened the scoring for Compassion in the 11th minute before doubling the lead. She scored two more goals before the first half. In the second half, Pearl scored three more goals to make it 7-0. Moncy Vaz was the other goal scorer for the winners. GFA president Dr Caitano Fernandes was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of other GFA officials and club members.
