MARGAO
Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda blanked Margao SC 2-0 to move into the semifinals of the Guirdolim Panchayat Cup at Church Ground, Chandor on Sunday.
A large Sunday crowd had their money's worth as the teams displayed an entertaining brand of football. The tireless Cliff Baretto was at the centre of all the moves for Margao but their forwardline led by Mario Noronha missed many chances.
One counterattack by Paroda in the 22nd minute saw Anthony Dias connect a low cross by Kanchan Kiro to score the first goal. Margao then committed more bodies forward but could not penetrate the Paroda defence. Changing over, Paroda started to show dominance and put the Margao defence under immense pressure. In the 42nd minute, a shot from 40 yards out by Shrine Clemente hit the crossbar and on to the back of the Margao keeper and into the goal, 2-0.
In the 50th minute, a free-kick by Cliff Baretto of Fatorda narrowly missed the Paroda goal. In the dying minutes, Agnelo Noronha's pile-driver was kept out by the Paroda keeper. Shrine Clemente of Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda received the Man of the Match prize from Joaquim D'Cruz, ex-player of Guirdolim Club.
Cuncolim Union edge into quarterfinals
Cuncolim Union beat Ugem Rising Club 5-3 via tiebreaker into the quarterfinals of the Fr Bruno Leitao Memorial Cup, organised by Union of Chinchinim Villagers, at Our Lady of Hope Church ground, Chinchinim, on Sunday.
Ugem took the lead through Clive Gomes in the 13th minute but the joy was shortlived as Daulat Dessai of Cuncolim equalised in the 21st minute. In the tiebreaker, Cuncolim Union netted through Ashtrosio Pinto, Dailon Carvalho, Alister Fernandes and Melvin Fernandes. For Ugem Rising Club, Lauren Fernandes and Cleward Pereira scored. Asiyo Pulyamalial of Ugem Rising Club was named the Man of the Match.
