USA-based Francis Borges will be competing in the Boston Marathon in April next year and will join a select band of runners to receive the 6-star medal from Abbott World Major Marathons.
The Cuncolim-born runner, who works as a Global Head of a Food Value Chain has competed in 10 marathons so far and is on the verge of completing a unique record as a long-distance runner. Having competed in the top 5 marathons of the world, he is looking to take part in the sixth one which will elevate him and make him a member of a select club and will be recognised by a 6-star medal by Abbott World Marathon Majors at the end of the Boston Marathon.
The Abbott World Marathon Majors is a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, TCS London Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon.
Francis, has been supporting and promoting many social causes in different countries including his home State Goa and has since launched a campaign to raise $10,000 of which $875 so far has been raised in the online campaign launched two days back. “I'm taking part in the 127th Boston Marathon to raise money for the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, who do great work for a cause that's very close to my heart. If you can, please donate to my fundraising project on GivenGain,” said the Durham, North Carolina-based long-distance runner who did his school studies in Our Lady of Health High School, Cuncolim and thereafter at Chowgule Higher Secondary, St Xavier's Mapusa and higher education in Mumbai.
“Each of my marathons, I have done fundraising. My colleagues, friends and family have supported me with generous donations and best wishes. I look forward to running the Boston Marathon with your best wishes and generous donation to my charity American Red Cross. They do amazing work and I'd be really grateful for your support,” he added.
Talking about the Boston Marathon, Francis said: “This will be my 11th marathon. But more importantly this is my 6th marathon to complete the Abbott World Marathon Majors. So six cities, three continents, one remarkable goal,” said Francis, who is an avid football fan.
“To help Francis get in this race, you can support Francis’s charity: American Red Cross of Massachusetts, the Goal is to raise $10,000. The tax-free contribution will support all the humanitarian needs of the American Red Cross and help get Francis closer to the starting line at the Boston Marathon," says an appeal posted on social media platforms.
