Janata High School, Mapusa emerged as the State sub-junior hockey boys champions after defeating Damodar English High School, Gudi 9-0 in the finals played at Astro Turf, Peddem, Mupasa.
In a fast-paced match at the start, the teams pressed hard to find an opening, and Rakesh Yadav of Janata HS put the team ahead in the 5th minute through a field goal. In the second quarter, Janata HS scored two quick goals through Rakesh and Vasant in the 21st and 24th minutes of the game. On resumption of play in the third quarter, Janata HS put pressure and scored six more goals with Vasant scoring a hat-trick and Deepak and Abhay Sarkar also sounding the board.
Janata earned four penalty corners but could convert only one, while Damodar earned two penalty corners and wasted both. Only Pravav Broker and Kunal Gaonkar did well for the Gudi school.
In the girls' section, St Anthony HS, Duler made a short work of Perpetual Convent School, Navelim with an 11-0 win. Captain Jiya Margod was the highest scorer with six goals to her credit while Varsha Pednekar, Rasika Patil, Amish Harmalkar and Sneha Das were the other scorers. Perpetual Convent could not penetrate in the St Anthony half as their opponents were far superior.
