United Boys of Majorda clinched the 1st All-Goa Petornila D'Cunha 7-a-side football tournament, organised by Friends Circle, after routing Shanay Builders 4-0 in the summit clash at Figuiredo Ground, Pontenol, Curchorem.
United Boys led 2-0 at half time. They dominated the game and broke the deadlock when Suraj slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Spurred by the success, United Boys upped the ante and doubled the lead midway in the first half as Lucky found the target.
Post resumption, the match continued in the same vein with United Boys dominating. With time running out, Shanay Builders made concentrated efforts with Jerry making some forward forays and Myron and Lawrence unleashing some stinging shots. However, rival goalkeeper Jerry was up to the task.
United Boys of Majorda were awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 while Shanay Builders had to settle for a prize of Rs 30,000. Power Minister Nilesh Cabral was the chief guest, while Balkrishna Hodarkar, ex-chairperson of CMC was the guest of honour at the prize presentation function. Armando Colaco, ex-national and Dempo coach and Climax Lawrence, ex-India captain were present as special invitees. Fr Vithal Miranda, Fr Jerry Tito Cunha, Jasmine Braganza, Siddesh Bhise, Tony Coutinho, John D Costa, George D'Souza, Jhoncy Fernandes, Ali Shaikh and Kali Mataji were also present.
Colaco and Lawrence were felicitated on the occasion. The tournament was organised in memory of the late mother of ex-international footballer Alvito D'Cunha.
