78-year-old Panaji resident earns FIDE rapid rating milestone Goa's Jose Luis Coelho Velho, 78, has achieved a FIDE rapid rating of 1597.

Jose Luis Coelho Velho, a 78-year-old chess enthusiast from Panaji, has achieved an international FIDE rapid rating of 1597, becoming one of the oldest players from Goa to reach the milestone.

A mechanical engineer by profession and now a retired senior citizen, Velho has been actively participating in tournaments across Goa and at the national level, winning several prizes in recent events. His achievement is being seen as a significant moment for Goan chess, underlining that age is no barrier to competitive sport.

Velho has been training under FIDE Instructor Wilson Cruz at Champions Chess Academy in Goa. According to his coach, the milestone reflects Velho’s dedication and consistent effort in the sport. His progress has also served as an inspiration to aspiring and veteran players alike.
