Ambelim Sports Club overcame the challenge from Raia Sporting Club 4-2 to move into the quarterfinals of Martin’s Cup inter village football tournament, organised by Betalbatim Sporting Club, at Betalbatim ground on Friday.
Both teams showed attacking intent and Raia took the lead in the 10th minute when Joston Barbosa fired home, giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper. Stung by the early setback, Ambelim upped the ante and three minutes later, Hayden Pinto’s attempt got deflected from a rival defender and eluded the rival goalkeeper into the goal, 1-1. In the 24th minute, Hayden Pinto then found the lead when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Crossing over, the match turned livelier. Ambelim were a dominant lot and penetrated the rival defence with sharp raids. Ralph Fernandes increase their tally when he punted the ball to the corner of the net. Samson Fernandes put the issue beyond doubt when he slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a stiff shot late in the match.
With time running out, Joston Barbosa reduced the margin at the fag end as he completed a brace. Vicky Gaunkar of Raia Sporting Club was adjudged as the Man of the match. Ambelim Sports Club will now meet Sporting Club of Davorlim in the quarterfinals on January 7.
