Bastora Boys (Men) and Young Sports (Women) emerged champions in the Goa Mavericks Sports Club (GMSC) All Goa Six-A-Side Hockey Tournament, held over two action-packed days at the Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa.
Crozen Society had a strong run in both the men’s and women’s categories, but had to settle for runners-up in both finals. In the men’s final, Bastora Boys defeated Crozen Society with a commanding 4-1 victory, while in the women’s final, Young Sports edged past Crozen Society to clinch the title.
A major highlight of the tournament was the selection of 18 standout male players to represent the Goa Mavericks Sports Club at the prestigious St. Peter’s Hockey Tournament in Bandra, Mumbai. These players will be fully sponsored by GMSC for their participation.
The selections were made by Goan-origin Olympians Mervyn Fernandis and Joaquim Carvalho, who were present throughout the tournament, closely monitoring the talent on display.
The finals and prize distribution ceremony saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Fr Agnelo Gomes, Director of Fr Agnel Ashram Educational Institute.
In addition, three promising young players — Aradhya Nayak, Chaitali Chavan, and Hansika Chikkeere — were recognized with special hockey equipment prizes, presented by Olympians Joaquim Carvalho and Mervyn Fernandis.
Addressing the gathering, Joaquim Carvalho, former India captain, coach, selector, and Arjuna awardee, praised the high standard of hockey showcased by both men’s and women’s teams. He emphasized the need for continuous tournaments to provide players with year-round exposure and growth opportunities.
Carvalho cited the transformation of Manipur's hockey scene as an example, stating that with structured development and investment in youth programs, Goa too could make significant strides in the national hockey arena.
The two-day event was generously sponsored by the Pai Kane Group of Companies, marking another milestone in promoting grassroots hockey in Goa.
