The third edition of Late Babu Naik All India cricket tournament started on Tuesday with BSNL, Chowgule, Dempo and Salgaonkar winning their opening matches played at four different venues.
The tournament was inaugurated by TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai in the presence of Digamber Kamat, Margao MLA, V M Prabhudessai, Director of Sports Authority of Goa, Pandurang (Bhai) Naik, President of the organising committee, and Hemant Angle, Secretary of the organising committee.
At Fatorda, DTDC were restricted to 130 all out in 39 overs after a fine spell by Kuldeep Diwan (5-21) who was well supported by Rohit Mehra (2-21) and Anshul K (1-20). Sunny Gupta (21), Siddesh Ramani (25), Yogesh (33) and Prafull Dhule (22) were the main run getters for DTDC. In reply, BSNL scored the winning runs with eight wickets in hand in 20.3 overs with Sanjeev K (48) and Bikas Pati (25) adding 65 runs for the first wicket and unbeaten knocks by N S Negi (16*) and Sunil (35*). Sumit took two wickets. Kuldeep Diwan was adjudged as the Man of the Match.
At Chicalim, a fantastic century by Keenan Vaz (107) and a fine all-round display by Saurabh Bandekar (74 with the bat and 4-22 with the ball) helped Dempo CC to their first win of the tournament against Geno SC.
Put in to bat by Geno, Dempo scored 275 all out in 40 overs with fine batting from Keenan and Saurabh, with support of Vaibhav Govekar (31). Lakshay Garg (3-66), Amit Yadav (3-46), Harshad Gadekar (2-34) and Dheeraj Yadav (2-56) bowled well for Geno. In reply, Geno were bundled out for 96 with only Rohit Asnodkar (30) showing some resistance. Saurabh Bandekar was the pick of the bowlers with 4-22 with Subodh (2-15) and Akshay (1-20) supporting the lead bowler well. Saurabh Bandekar was named as the Man of the Match.
Meanwhile at Agonda, Chowgule quelled the challenge of Nashik CA. After winning the toss and batting first, Nashik CA scored 159 all out in 34 overs with Pratik Athavle (60) and Ravindra Jadhav (39) top-scoring. Fine bowling performances by Amulya Pandrekar (4-21), Vedant Naik (3-40), Felix Alemao (2-20) and Tushar Narvenkar (1-18) restricted Nashik.
A scintillating unbeaten innings by youngster Ishaan Gadekar (75*), with the support of Tushar Narvenkar (31), Suraj Dongre (20) and Samar Dubhashi (25*), then helped Chowgule pass the required total of 160 with the loss of two wickets. Omkar Tawre was the only wicket taker for Nashik. Ishaan Gadekar was adjudged as the Man of the Match.
At Sanguem, Salgaonkar overcame the challenge from Deniel CA (Hyderabad). Winning the toss and batting first, Deniel were bundled out for 84 runs after a dream spell by Shadab Jakati, who claimed 5-8. For Deniel, only Bairaj (27) showed some resistance against the disciplined Salgaonkar bowling as Azim Kazi (2-12), Prajwal (1-17) and Sher Bahadur Yadav (1-14) supported Shadab well. Salgaonkar reached the required total in six overs with Swapnil S (56*) scoring some quick runs. Zubair and Kaustubh claimed one wicket each. Shadab Jakati was named as the Man of the Match.
