Calangute storm into Pogo Boys Cup final

Marcus led Calangute Veterans to a dominant 5-1 victory over Chandor Veterans to move into the finals of the Pogo Boys Cup 6.0 50+ Veterans tournament. The game began with Marcus scoring from a direct free kick in just the 3rd minute, putting Calangute ahead early. Although Jerry equalised for Chandor Veterans in the 10th minute, Marcus quickly regained the lead for Calangute and then completed his hat-trick in the first half with a well-placed shot, making it 3-1. Marcus continued to shine, providing an assist to Eddie, who calmly scored to extend the lead to 4-1 before the half-time whistle. In the second half, both teams created chances, but Calangute controlled most of the possession. Their dominance paid off in the dying minutes when Alwyn sealed the win with a powerful left-footed shot, ending the match 5-1 in favour of Calangute Veterans.

SC Davorlim move ahead

MARGAO: Sporting Club of Davorlim made it to the second round defeating Betalbatim Sporting Club 2-0 in an exciting match in the 49th Chandor Seamen Football tournament at Chandor ground on Friday. Agnelo Colaco opened the account for Davorlim in the 26th minute after the ball bounced back into the field of play from the hands of Betalbatim Custodian. The Betalbatim boys fought hard to bring parity but lady luck did not smile on them. After the break, Betalbatim lads came back with renewed vigour but their efforts did not bear fruit. The 2nd half became very exciting with both teams dishing out a good brand of soccer. The Davorlim lads increased their tally through Ajay Raj in the 45th minute, whose power-packed shot swiftly landed the ball into the rival nets, 2-0.

SBC badminton tourney inaugurated

MARGAO: All Goa Major ranking badminton tournament organised by Salcete Badminton Club, powered by Vision Goa, was inaugurated by Chirag Datta Naik in the presence of Goa Badminton Association (GBA) president Manoj Patil and Secretary Praveen Shenoy. Chirag motivated the young athletes by stating the importance of being focused and committed towards the game. He also emphasised the need for physical and mental fitness which will help in nation building. The secretary of GBA appreciated Slacete Badminton Club for organising the tournament in a grand and organised manner. The president announced detailed future plans for GBA. There has been an excellent turnout of young participants from across Goa for the tournament, primarily from the hinterlands of Salcete taluka. A total of 300+ matches will be played spread across three days.

Ponnabhat win seven-a-side tourney

MARGAO: Ponnabhat registered a solitary goal victory over Carmel Boys to lift the Curtorim, Tembi 24th Independence Cup 7-a-side mini-lighting football tournament at Tembi grounds, Curtorim ground on Thursday. Ponnabhat netted the match-winner through Savio in the second half. Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of other dignitaries and club officials.

Goa girls humiliated by Manipur

MARGAO: Goa suffered a humiliating 1-7 defeat at the hands of Manipur in Group B of the Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2024-25 Tier 1 at the RDT Stadium on Thursday. Manipur, who had already qualified for the semifinals, led 2-1 at halftime and scored through Nameirakpam Arina Devi (2), Longjam Nira Chanu, Ningthoujam Oliva Chanu, Lourembam Menaka Devi, Leihaothabam Lucy Devi and Remi Thokchom. Valaina Jada Fernandes was Goa's lone scorer. Manipur finished with nine points from three matches. In the last match of Group B, Mampi Roy scored once in each half to give West Bengal a consolation 2-1 win over Haryana. Parul found the target for Haryana in the 80th minute. Both teams are out of contention for a last-four berth.
