DULER

Candolim Sports Club rallied from a goal down to edge past Vagator Sports Club by a 3-1 margin in the GFA 2nd Division League, in a match played at Duler stadium, here on Friday.

The Candolim colts improved their league standing by winning their third match of the ongoing league. At the breather, the teams were locked in a 1-1 draw.

Candolim should have surged ahead in the 13th minute when Saprem Diukar collected a pass from Michael Dias and latched on a left-footer which travelled just past the side post. After much probing, Vagator broke the deadlock when Shubham Gaonkar moved swiftly from the centre and set up Anford Fernandes, who scored with a neat placement, 1-0.

It did not take long for Candolim to level terms as in the 26th minute, a 30-yard shot by Akxya Vengurlekar was blocked by Vagator keeper Pratik Kankonkar but a lurking Nikhil Naik tapped the ball into the goal, 1-1. Candolim should have taken the lead four minutes before the breather but a power-packed strike by Saprem Diukar was fisted away for a corner by keeper Pratik.

On crossing over in the 56th minute, Blake Haldanker dribbled past three Vagator defenders and passed the ball to Michael in the 18-yard box and the latter got the better of Anand Kerkar as he placed the ball into the goal, 2-1. Candolim made it 3-1 when Michael Dias connected his header off a corner into the goal.

In the last 10 minutes of the match, Candolim would have heaped further misery on their opponents, but Saprem Diukar and Nikhil Naik’s strikes rebounded off the post, while Nikhil’s header from close was fisted for a corner by the keeper.

At Poriat grounds, Sinquerim Sports Club got the better of Holy Cross Arambol by a mammoth 13-0 margin. Mayuresh Naik did most of the damage as he hammered in seven goals. Ashish Gawas, Dattaraj Tari, Samir Shaikh, Mandar Narvenkar, Paras Deulkar and Joaquim Pacheco were the other scorers

for the winners.
