Churchiil Brothers FC extended their impressive run with a narrow 1-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the GFA Professional League, at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Monday.
Churchill Brothers were clearly better organised team in both attack and defence but their forwards were not clinical in front of the goal. Churchill Brothers first notable strike on goal came when striker Uttam Rai found the crossbar with a scorching attempt. Nicholas Fernandes then shot wide from close range, leaving the Churchill fans dismayed. In the 25th minute, Uttam Rai was in action again as he tested Panjim Footballers goalkeeper Sherwin Da Cunha who blocked the powerful shot.
At the other end, Panjim Footballers had their chance when midfielder Darryl Costa hit a rasping shot at goal but it was saved by Churchill goalkeeper Kunzang Bhutia. Ultimately, it was Bhutia’s counterpart Da Cunha who proved to be the difference between the teams as he kept Panjim Footballers in the game as the teams went into the break goalless.
Post resumption, Churchill Brothers continued to enjoy ball possession and substitute Clencio Pinto joined Uttam Rai in the attack as the Red Machines went in search of a goal. The match winner finally came in the 57th minute when midfielder Sevelon Cardozo floated the ball from the right flank to Uttam Rai, who headed the ball home giving no chance to Da Cunha in the Panjim goal.
Panjim Footballers survived further examination by the rival attackers as the match ended 1-0 in Churchill’s favour. With the win, Churchill Brothers took their tally to 27 points from 13 matches while Panjim Footballers stay on 11 points from 14 matches.
