DULER
Cunchelim Sports Club and Milagres Sports Club settled for a goalless draw in the GFA Second Division League, organised by GFA, at Duler stadium, here on Monday.
In an absorbing match, witnessed by a large number of supporters, the teams close to each other in contest of qualifying to the next stage of the league, played at a very fast pace. Milagres started the seventh league match with 15 points while Cunchelim had 11 points.
The Cunchelim outfit had two close attempts at the rival goal in the 33rd and 44th minutes of play. A 40-yard strike by Rohan Kamble was superbly saved by Milagres keeper Soma Korgaonkar, while a minute before the breather, a fine combined moved by Nayan Virnodkar and Rohan Kamble to find Nayan, who was well positioned inside the penalty box, saw him hit the side netting. Milagres had just one good attempt at the goal where Jolan set up Lloyd Cardozo just outside the penalty box, whose blistering shot was fisted for a corner by Cunchelim keeper Siraj Banaulikar.
On crossing ends, the match was full of action with the ball travelling from one end to another with both the keepers bringing some outstanding saves. In the very first minute after the restart, Cunchelim keeper Siraj and then Santosh Pawar blocked Milagres’ Lesten Martins’ strikes in a goalmouth scramble.
Cunchelim keeper Siraj was back in action as he brilliantly tipped the ball over the post from a smart header by Lesten Martins off a corner. At the other end, Milagres keeper Soma was equal to the task as he made back-to-back saves to deny Yallappa Satyaappago from scoring.
Milagres were indeed once again unlucky as a 40-yard shot by Schubert Colaco rebounded off the post. In the 68th minute, Cunchelim almost broke the deadlock where a brilliant cross by Rohan saw a tap at the goal by Ganesh brush the leg of Milagres defender for a corner. Milagres were content of having secured a draw from the encounter to keep their arch-rivals four points apart.
